Rural Development

Rural Development logoAs developments in global production networks and increased urbanisation have changed the character of rural areas, rural development policy has widened its scope. Apart from mining, agriculture and forestry, it now includes tourism and niche manufactures. There is an increasing awareness of the importance of rural areas, which possess assets that can help meet some of Europe's major socioeconomic challenges. The diversification of economic activity and improvement of the quality of life in rural areas is a mission shared by the European Union's rural development policy and its Cohesion Policy.

"The need for rural communities to approach development from a wider perspective has created more focus on a broad range of development goals rather than merely creating incentive for agricultural or resource based businesses. Education, entrepreneurship, physical infrastructure, and social infrastructure all play an important role in developing rural regions."
