Intelligent Transport Systems
Good Practice Information
It is a good practice of technological investments in automatic ticketing in public transport introduced in Italy. As a result of integrated fares, ACTIVO electronic card has been developed. It is a card that enables users to travel throughout Eastern Veneto and Treviso’s urban network. The new electronic travel card adopted on the ACTT and ATVO (municipal transport companies dealing with buses and coaches) networks allows to travel more conveniently and flexibly thanks to the “contact less” technology. The ACTIVO card enables users to store in it more different travel tickets (for example a monthly ticket and a multi-ride ticket) and guarantees more mobility and saving.
An integrated fares system allows to use indifferently – within a certain territory – various means of public transport (train, bus, metro etc.) with a single travel document. It has been adopted in order to favour, promote and facilitate the use of local public transport, thanks to the unification and simplification of tickets. Born on the basis of experiences linked to wide metropolitan cities in particular abroad, these systems have been later adopted in wider territorial contexts, up to the regional level.
Evidence of success
As a result of this practice, the interoperability of the same travel card between different bus companies on different routes has been increased. The ticketing system has been unified and simplified. This ticketing system will enable passengers to save money and since next school year it will make it possible to travel on two different routes managed by two different transport companies (ACTT for the area of Treviso and ATVO for the area of San Donà di Piave) with one single ticket.
