Topic of the practice

Management and utilisation of green space within dense urban area, provide an evaluation toolkit to gauge the economic, social and wider impact of investment on green space.

Good Practice Information

A valuation framework for assessing the potential economic & wider returns from investment in green infrastructure & environmental improvements has been established by a project steering group including regional development agencies. This toolkit is available as a prototype and free open source on internet. There is a users’ guide & a calculator to assess the value of green infrastructures.
Green Infrastructure is the network of natural environmental components and green and blue spaces that lies within and between the North West's cities, towns and villages which provides multiple social, economic and environmental benefits (it increases property & land values, attracts & retains people ensuring stable population & labour supply, etc.)

Evidence of success

Current investment secured as part of the toolkit intervention in London alone is over £43million from public & private sources. The toolkit has assisted in economically valuing the softer impacts as health benefits, building design quality (natural cooling), etc.
