Development and manufacturing of the prototype of a new generation electric vehicle

Good Practice Information

For the development of the MICRON concept car a new approach for suppliers was followed initiated by a PROSESC Project Partner. 30 suppliers in the field of automotive cooperatively designed and realized a fully functioning prototype in only 6 months time. Normally smaller companies are addressed to support automotive industry only in 2nd - 4th level. Through the new manufacturing concept it was enabled to better integrate the suppliers in early stage processes. To make this possible latest design and simulation techniques was used by the team in order to shorten the design process and experiences and techniques from previous cooperations in between the suppliers were deepened and used.
The main problem addressed was the valuable coordination af many companies and achieving results in a short time. In terms of technical difficulties the project team had to find the right compromizes between customer wishes and possibilities. Due to this no testing period could be carried out.
The key processes and characteristics of the good practice were:
-right partners with expertise and responsibility
-frequent communication
-fast decision making by intensive discussions with customers
-integration of right products or suppliers
-using existing network with the right motivation
In the good practice activities along the entire car design and manufaturing were integrated. Examples of technical experiences include: STyling & design, simulation, electrical planning, part production & assembly, supplier management, project management, media menagement, publicity, testing, et al.

Evidence of success

. ready fully functioning prototype
. new partnerships created and existing ones deepened
. gaining of further experiences for involved partners
. staisfied customer
. chances for new contracts for participating SMEs
. new products

Still room for improvements is there. Following the PROSESC Project Partner during the next project initiated similarly to this good practice even more expert partners will be involved and more ressources for the key planning / organising persons will be foreseen. This should lead to a better inquiring and an improved buying procedure.
