Good Practice Information

The county council of Västerbotten has adopted a health examination programme for all 40, 50, 60 year olds in Västerbotten. It started as a small project in a town in Västerbotten (Norsjö) and has now grown to cover the entire region. The examination takes 2,5 hours and consists of a number of tests including blood-pressure, blood fats, weight and height and Body mass index.
In addition the examination contains an extensive questionnaire about health, quality of life, social life, family and work related questions, alcohol consumption, tobacco and physical activity. Based on the results the patient will have a “health talk” with a district nurse and an individual health plan is developed,

Evidence of success

A study that’s been made by Swedish statistics, the social boards records of cause of death and 17 years of health examinations show that the ones which took part in the examinations halved their risks of premature death and it has been calculated that these examinations have prevented 1000 premature deaths.
