Topic of the practice

Free software development for municipal crisis management of floods in the Saxon State Office

Good Practice Information

The Saxon State Office owns a software that eases municipal crisis management that can be used freely. The software combines databases and GIS-tools optimized for easy access of all relevant informations. It needs wide spread information like water levels at relevant gauges and local information like altitude of vulnerable objects e.g. hospitals.
Additionaly important measures and addresses can be stored in the database. In case of a flood the input of a water level at a relevant gauge triggers the output of maps, necessary measures or contact lists necessary for preventive action. Accesss can be obtained by a written request towards the Saxon State Office of Environment, Agriculture and Geology.

Evidence of success

'- a structural and data oriented very open software
- can be adapted to several or specific requirements and possibilities of their user
- free of charge
- the existent database structure for language internationalization allows a fast translation to every other language
- no additional installation of a GIS necessary
