Good Practice Information

The good practice of Carbon footprint policy's objective shows how to raise environmental awareness and create more environmentally friendly tourism businesses. The carbon footprint policy develops one of the aims of the tourism strategy of Lahti Region: to create a policy for social responsibility, which the tourism businesses in the region can utilise in their management. Environmental as well as economical and social aspects are included in the social responsibility.
The carbon footprint policy develops the environmental policy of the social responsibility policy aim. The policy includes a carbon footprint calculation for the pilot businesses and the creation fo a pilot version of an environmental handbook for tourism businesses. The handbook includes measures for decreasing the carbon footprint and presents the financial benefits of being environmentally friendly. The practice aims to motivate entrepreneurs to take a proactive attitude towards environmental issues through increasing the awareness and knowledge of the entrepreneurs.
The financial resources fo the policy are being provided by the Lahti Region Environmental Service (City of Lahti), which is also implementing the policy. The beneficiaries are local rural tourism entrepreneurs. So far the carbon footprint has been calculated for 6 accommodation businesses adn has as a result that the entrepreneurs become more aware of the environmental issues and realising the issues they have to work on.

Evidence of success

The calculation of the carbon footprint has been welcomed by the pilot businesses. They found the results interesting and the process of gathering information for the calculation has made them more aware of their businesses' consumption patterns. The calculation process motivated one of the pilot businesses to reduce the amount of the landfill waste by 30 %, 5000 kg, in three months during the high season.
