Good Practice Information

Owners of 'green vehicles' in Jämtland county can apply for parking permits which allow them to park for free in the city. This permit is valid in any public place (the streets and public parking lots) in Östersund, being the region’s only major city. The vehicle types given permits as green vehicles under the scheme, including true electric cars, Ethanol Cars E85, Natural gas and biogas vehicles, and gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles - including hybrid models - that emit up to 120g/km of carbon dioxide (equivalent to approximately 5.0 litre gasoline/100km or 4.5 litre diesel/100 km). In order for diesel cars to be approved, they must also have particulate filters or other comparable treatment technology. Cars that run on alternative fuel must also have limits on maximum fuel consumption.

Evidence of success

The municipality of Östersund was recognised as the electrical vehicle municipality of the year in 2011. The strategy is to facilitate a growing stock of true electric cars in the area.
