Good Practice Information
CTAER (Centro Tecnológico Avanzado de Energías Renovables - Centre for Advanced Renewable Energy Technologies) is a research cluster promoted by Junta de Andalucia (Andalusian Government) and established as a private foundation in 2007 devoted by the first time in Andalusia and Spain as a research & development (R&D) centre for different technologies on renewable energy source (RES), i.e. solar, wind and biomass, working through improvement of efficiency and costs reduction. Among the founding partners there are several regional and national public bodies including the Andalusian Energy Agency, three different Andalusian universities and the most relevant companies regarding the energy sector in Andalusia and Spain. The foundation was granted 12 Million EUR from the Regional Ministry to start up and goes on fundraising in order to ensure their activities. The main work areas since 2008, have been located in three different locations according to the best RES potentials for Solar, Biomass and Wind/Marine energy.
Evidence of success
CTAER has become a worldwide known centre of excellence in the field of research on concentrated solar power (CSP). It is actively developing innovative CSP patents. Furthermore, CTAER has joined in the EU SOLARIS project, as a part of the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) Roadmap. The objective of EU SOLARIS is to develop the needed R&D capacities for CSP technologies through the integration of all related European R&D excellence groups. Another output is the SOLAR CONCENTRA - CSP Technological Platform, a network broadly linking up to 90 different actors and 117 members from the CSP knowledge bodies to strengthen the R&D activities on CSP.
