Good Practice Information

CEwind (Centre of Excellence for Wind Energy) is a research network, founded in 2005, which combines research activities of the universities of Schleswig-Holstein in the fields of wind energy technology. In 2009 CEwind was registered as a co-operative. All involved stakeholders, like professors and research centres therefore became investigative members. CEwind pursues the goal to deal with fundamental questions of future wind turbines, wind parks and the corresponding infrastructure through scientific work. These questions can be grouped under the heading "Intelligent wind energy systems of the future" and are currently focused in the demand for offshore projects, which was identified by the wind energy industry. Answers to the main questions of grid connection and integration, design of rotor blades, generator, tower and foundation, operation monitoring and maintenance and environmental impact are intended to be found for projects with wind turbines in the multi-megawatt class and with extreme local conditions. CEwind has the following objectives: Turning SH into a centre for research and development for wind energy use, developing a close interaction between universities and industry, systematic networking of all scientific expertise and capacities in the area of wind energy research in SH, supporting problem-based interdisciplinary collaboration, initiating joint R&D projects, initiating and organising nationwide cooperation, organising a professional network infrastructure, practice-oriented education of highly skilled personnel, business consultancy, preparing the formation of spin-off companies. CEwind is financed by the programme for the future - Economy which is funded by the EU through the European Regional Development Fund, the federal state of Germany and the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein.

Evidence of success

CEWind connects regional stakeholders and it enhances the potential of the region Schleswig-Holstein. One of the concrete outputs is the Master of Science Studies Programme in "Wind Engineering" which has jointly and successfully been developed by different universities, academies and universities of Applied Sciences and now provides an education programme for engineers which is well suited to the needs of the wind industry.
