Topic of the practice
reducing emissions, increasing park income
Good Practice Information
Parco Nord Milano has made its carbon credits available to all those who want to compensate the impact of their activities, thanks to its policy of continuous reforestation.Since 2007, the park has set up a convention to neutralise greenhouse gas emissions and generate credits through a reforestation project and certification of captured C02. With this agreement, covering 11.5 hectares of forest,
the RINA certification body has certified that 8508 tons of carbon dioxide were seized.
All carbon credits were sold to an intermediate company at a fix price: 7000€ per/ha per year that is to say 82.000€. The intermediate company managed to sell the carbon credits even twice because several other companies preferred to have forests in suburban areas rather than in other parts of the world.
Evidence of success
The amount of carbon credits sold and reduction in emissions is important. The 8508 tons siezed in 11.5 h is significant since literature reports an average absorption capacity of 350 tons per hectare. This is more that double. The type of wood brought to the park and is particularly effective in sequestration of CO2.
