Topic of the practice

Development of tourist infrastructure around the Jeziorak lake - systems of marinas. Preserving natural areas.

Good Practice Information

The Jeziorak lake good practice shows how tourist infrastructure around a lake can be developed while preserving natural areas. The good practice demonstrates the new way of development and waste management around the lake as well as advanced infrastructure for nautical tourism.
The lake is a part of the Iława Lake District Landscape Park. It is the 6th largest lake in Poland and the longest one in terms of width. There are 1200 boats travelling annually on it. Consequently, there was a necessity of creation of marinas system to preserve the beauty of the lake and surroundings.
The tourism system has now been equipped with 27 marinas fully adapted for tourists vacationing at the lake Jeziorak: mainly sailors, motorboats men and anglers.
One marina is a harbour fully equipped in the necessary sanitary, administrative and economic installations. The standard equipment includes: a floating jetty for mooring 18 units, a tower with an observation platform, a point of emergency boat repairs, sewage connections and other necessary appliances. The marina functions on a natural protected area and is fully environmental friendly. The marina collects payment for its service and is therefore now self financing. The standard pricing includes mooring fees, electric charging or connection, sewage collection, parking and accommodation.
Most of the funding to build the marinas around the Lake Jeziorak came from the Integrated Regional Operational Programme 2004-2006. In 2006 the Association of the Communes "Jeziorak" applied to the Marhall of Warmińsko-Mazurskie Voivodeship and received money from the EU Funds.
The marina system has proved to be successful on the Lake Jeziorak and can be easily transferred.

Evidence of success

Due to the water system of the lake it is observed that every year more and more boats' travellers come. Moreover, because of the improved tourist infrastructure, the Association organizes tourist events like workshops on environment protection, prepares ecological projects targeted especially at the primary and secondary school students. Another effect is that more attention is being payed to environment and pollution.
