Sustainable mobility - ride sharing.

Good Practice Information

In the small village of Tolg a ride-sharing concept was developed in order to increase the sustainability of their village. With the support of the regional government a ride-sharing system based on web and mobile phone was developed. A person can register as driver, passenger or both. The village decides on suitable stops and fees for the rides. When planning a trip, the person choses a driver via their computer or mobile phone. The drivers that gets a text message and either confirms or rejects the request. The system registers all bookings and sends bills to the passengers and pays the drivers. The initiative is seen as a complement to public transport. In Tolg, the bus timetable is included in the system in order to optimise the outcome for both the inhabitants and for the public transport provider.

Evidence of success

After the first year, more than 20 percent of the people in the village are registered users of the ride-sharing system with an average of 5 ride shares per day. Tolg has around 500 inhabitants. 25 000 km of rides have been shared in the first year and 650 rides have had 850 passengers.
