Good Practice Information

The 'energy foxes' competition between schools focusses on energy efficiency. It is announced at the beginning of the school year. In an opening event the pupils present their registered project ideas regarding energy saving and renewable energy. The pupils gain knowledge on project days and study visits, make models or conduct experiments. The best projects are awarded with challenge cups in a final exhibition. All participants receive small prizes.
The municipality and the energy supplier are actively involved. The Lord Mayor hands over the awards in person. Companies and experts support the processing of the projects and donate prizes. A presentation on the concept of the contest has been developed and is available for download to be spread among other communes and regions.

Evidence of success

The contest has thrived partly becuase of a high level of publicity. The local press and TV have reported the contest. An addtional benfit is that the family, teachers and friends of the pupils who take part, as well as other citizens are made aware of energy efficiency issues. 6 schools of Bautzen with 77 pupils and 10 projects took part last year. The contest was the subject of 16 articles in media with about 90 visitors to the competition events.
