Energy Saving Competition in Schools
Topic of the practice
energy saving, energy efficiency, renwable energies, sustainable life style
Good Practice Information
Energy saving competitions in schools were held in the City of Meerane. As a first step interested classes or student groups (13 years +) were instructed during workshops on how to save energy at home by no cost measures (i.e. only by behavioural change). In addtion to this students learnt how to read their families electricity supply meter. Subsequently, competitions were carried out lasting about 8 weeks each, to implement and measure the impact of energy saving measures at home. In Germany the competition suits the curriculum of class 7 (aged 13 years) perfectly when electricity is a main topic in physics. The savings were calculated in % to be able to compare student groups/classes with different numbers of participants. The winner was honored by a small award officially handed over by the Lord Mayor.
Evidence of success
Electricity savings (only achieved by behavioural changes) were 5 % (winter) and 10 % (summer). Since savings are made at home, the students act as multipliers, spreading the idea and knowledge on how to behave in a sustainable manner, to the rest of their family. This means that the target group is extended enormously. Apart from saving CO2-emissions and helping the climate the families benefit from reduced energy costs.
