Energy saving through power, district heating, district cooling and waste treatment

Good Practice Information

Since the start of the 1970s, Korstaverket has produced and supplied district heating in Sundsvall. Its partnerships with property owners in Sundsvall have led to major environmental improvements in the city. The development of district heating has given Sundsvall better air, lower energy consumption through more efficient heat production and cheaper heating. At Korstaverket energy is recovered from combustible household waste and business waste from a large part of the counties of Västernorrland, Jämtland and Gävleborg. The company sells treatment services for energy recovery from combustible waste to municipalities and businesses in the region. The market for waste treatment is variable and the composition and origin of waste fuel changes over time. Specific requirements are made for the content and composition of the waste fuel for each contract.

Evidence of success

Around 260,000 tonnes of household and business waste are collected and used per year.
