Local Environmental Calendar
Topic of the practice
Local information on waste recycling systems, recycling stations, local energy and environment projects and useful tips on low carbon behaviour.
Good Practice Information
The production of a local envrionmental calendar which provides local information on waste recycling systems, recycling stations, local energy and environment projects as well as useful tips on low carbon behaviour. The origin of this calendar was to enable the information to reach every household within the Region of Gotland. It is an annual publication with cooperation between different actors within the municipal/regional organisation. The calendar was developed through the establishment of a working group responsible for the annual theme of the calendar and a choice of information for each month. The calendar includes 12 main pages (one for each month) and also a 16 page information section. The information in this section is on how to sort the waste, how to recycle the waste and what happens with the recycled material. For the waste material which cannot be recycled there is a section on how to sort it into compostable or burnable waste
... and how it will be used as fuel at the cement factory on Gotland. The information section includes short news about eco municipality projects such as TrIsCo as well as the eco municipality idea as a whole and other environmental projects on Gotland e.g. biogas production for car fuel and project for improving all small scale sewage treatment on Gotland. The funding for the calendar is provided by the Municipality and costs for layout, print and distribution, excluding labour costs, is approx. €1.20 per calendar.
Evidence of success
This is a useful calendar which can be used by every household and highlights different environmental issues. The Municipality has an Environmental Programme in which they believe environmental issues must be discussed in many different contexts and a sustainable society cannot just be achieved through political decisions. This calendar is a tool which can empower the local community to become responsible for their actions. There has not been a formal evaluation of the calendar however there has been informal comments made by the residents e.g. "Thank you for the much appreciate calendar. Hardly ever I get such a positive, pleasant and reviving piece of print in my mail box! I hope that everyboy who gets it feel their responsibility. At least it gives me motivation to sort out waste and do my part and contribute to a better environment" Quoted from a mail from Lillemor, librarian.
