Topic of the practice

The Europe programme represents a new mechanism for cooperation between LA and civil sector. It supports the implementation of successful initiatives and good EU practices in the capital. The Programme supports local policies in areas of education, social affairs, voluntarism, marginalized and disadvantaged people, The focus this year is on the candidature of Sofia for European capital of Culture.

Good Practice Information

Europe programme was initiated based on provisions in the Local Legislation as well as a political decision. Successful practices and alternative ideas from the civil sector were funded by and it resulted in a)gathering experience and self-confidence in newly established non-government organizations, b)the ideas, information and products enrich and support the activities of the administration.
Europe Programme was initiated by the Permanent Commission on European Affairs and Civil Society relations with the Sofia City Council (SCC). According to the rules adopted by the SCC the programme is managed by municipal councilors and a coordinator. The Programme is funded with the budget of Sofia Municpality. The SCC is an independent from Sofia Municipality though mutually interlinked.

Evidence of success

The rising number of applications each year, better quality of projects, and successfully implemented projects make the Programme itself success. In general 99 projects were supported and successfully implemented during the last 4 years.
