Good Practice Information
Elefsina implemented a door-to-door information campaign, with Ecological Recycling Society (ERS), to engage the population on a personal level and create a sense of commitment to the community to participate in recycling, thus increasing municipal recycling levels.
Trained volunteers visited households, provided information on recycling facilities, and collected opinions on local waste management
Stakeholders: ERS, the Municipality of Elefsina, households, shops, businesses
Financial Resources: fully financed by the municipality - economic benefits are now showing, thanks to new charges per ton of waste to landfill.
Key success factors: level of implementation (72.18% households informed) and level of professionalism maintained during implementation by campaigners & ERS coordination group
Evidence of success
Analysis of packaging recycling rates from 2006 to 2009 show increased recycling rates. Although this is not exclusively linked to the campaign, it idid have a strong impact on recycling habits.
Other positive outcomes include the number of people employed by the project, the increased awareness, and the environmental benefit of increased recycling of other waste such as batteries, WEEE etc.
