Topic of the practice

Waste management, bulky waste, selective collection, collection on demand.

Good Practice Information

Bulky waste collection is made on request with the municipal services and collection occurs within 24h. This service is free for quantities <1m3 and involves cardboard, green waste, WEEE, C&D waste, ferrous materials, wood, furniture and other bulky waste. Open box trucks with a lift platform are used, or small electric tricycle trucks for the narrow streets of historical neighbourhoods.
The waste is then sorted into big containers at municipal facilities, in order to be led to different types of treatment and valorisation.
Stakeholders: municipality, citizens
Financial resources: general budget of the municipality, running expenses: +/-60€/h.
Key success factors: agreement and scheduling of a collection time between the municipal services and the citizens; quality of the service.

Evidence of success

On-demand services allow the collection of certain types of waste that cannot be collected by conventional ways. It also enables the differentiated treatment and valorisation of waste streams, instead of being mixed in the residual waste collection or dumped in the streets.
Amounts collected by this service have been increasing until 2010 then the economic crisis affected overall waste production.
