Bus on Demand
Topic of the practice
CO2-reduction through surface accessibility by a transport system for employees working in/around the airport (during hours they cannot use public transport or as an alternative for their own cars).
Good Practice Information
During the study visit to Charles de Gaulle airport El Prat learnt from the project Fileo that provides bus services to the workers of the area of the airport. To adapt to the situation, El Prat contacted with the bus metropolitan authority and with the company Capmar in order to implement a bus on demand service redesigning the last part of the way of a bus line (PR-3). Thus the city implemented
2 new bus stops at the industrial area of the airport that can be used by the workers just pushing a button that (by Wi-Fi) informs the nearest bus that there is a traveler waiting there and the traveler in a few seconds about the waiting time of the arrival of the bus. If the passenger is at the bus he just has to ask the driver that he wants to go to the industrial bus stops.
Evidence of success
The cost of starting this good practice is low: about € 27.500. The environment benefits due to lesser use of private cars by workers of Industrial and airport areas. Based on the first results it is estimated that the measure will save about 800 tones of CO2 a year.
