Topic of the practice

EnergiBasque is a comprehensive strategy designed to position the Basque Country as a benchmark of knowledge and a leader in industrial development in the field of Energy. BC is home to a vibrant energy industry with around 350 companies operating across a range of specialist sectors, turnover of those firms in 2011 was more than €50bn, €15.5bn sourced locally, providing over 20,000 jobs

Good Practice Information

EnergiBasque is part of the Energy Strategy for the Basque Country 2020 (3E2020), which proposes action lines in three different areas: Energy Consuming Sectors; Energy Markets and Supply; and Technological and Industrial Development, is b ased on using energy policies as a magnet element for innovative projects.These are complementary objectives that help capitalise on the Country’s strengths.
EnergiBasque implementation mobilise funds from the Basque Public Administration, the Spanish Public Administration, the EU, and form companies operating within the sector.The differentiating contribution of the Basque Energy Strategy 3E2020 is its commitment to taking advantage of the huge energy and environmental challenges, which represent an opportunity for growth for the business sectors.

Evidence of success

The aim of EnergiBasque is to increase R&D expenditure by energy companies in the Basque country by up to €300m by 2015, a 50% increase on 2011. Total jobs in EnergiBasque companies within the area are expected to rise from 20,000 up to 28,000.this will have a multiplying effect generating business, fostering technological progress and contributing to an improvement in the living standards
