22@Barcelona promotes the creation of multidisciplinary centre, aimed to agglutinate the main public and private agents seeking to improve its competences and international projection. The clusters’ creation into several fields of knowledge has allowed the concentration in the area of companies, public institutions, universities, and scientific and
technologic centres of those strategic sectors: Media, ICT, Medical Technologies, Energy and Design. 22@barcelona concentrates its activities on the media content and audio-visual-production industry that can be applied in many sectors, such as health and safety, the automotive industry, medicine and mobility. It has developed a pioneer technology to discover what is new in the media in real time.

Evidence of success

Currently, 22@Barcelona has 83,640 business premises, 42.5% more than in 2002. The latest available census of shows 7,064 companies and 4,400 freelance workers. The number of companies has grown 105.5% since 2000, where there were 3,437 businesses. 4,500 new companies have moved to the district since 2000, an average of 545 per year and 1.2 per day. Of the 4,500 companies, 47.3% are new start-ups.
