Promoting a region by boosting the cultural sector by cultural tourism development plans.

Good Practice Information

The development of the Cultural Tourism Development Plans is a good example how a region can be promoted. This kind of strategy is not common in rural and mountain areas. The spatial plan is an innovation for most regions in Europe as there is no such statutory procedure, but it can be integrated to existing planning systems.
The practise covered also the development of Visitor Information Centres focused on cultural heritage of the region. The project generated a positive impact to regional cohesion through the economic, employment and social inclusion expected benefits that are usually associated with tourism development.

Evidence of success

The practice strengthened local economy by creating jobs in ICT sector supporting tourism (virtual tours, digitalization of assets) and maintaining and strengthening the hotel sector. Ten Bielsko-Biała District Communes authorities and hotel owners became more aware of the importance of ICT and virtual tours in cultural heritage promotion.
