Topic of the practice

Online German hiking path management system (a product)

Good Practice Information

The German Hiking Association developed a product to all interested hiking & tourist organisations to build up/foster a national database for hiking paths by offering an online software as a national standardised system where path data can be centralized and managed, thus overcoming regional and institutional borders. The internet based platform, modern technique and the possibility for system
supported communication allow an all-time overview of all data and actively involve the cooperating partners to the path management. Success factors = growing inflow of local path information to be processed to build up a national network for a better path maintenance and management | Conditions for potential transfer = transfer of technological know-how to similar international stakeholders.

Evidence of success

17 user organisations are using the hiking path management system. Every year the German Hiking Association (GHA) is organising 2-3 teaching courses with 6-12 participants. About 82.000 km of hiking paths data is added to the system.
GHA is working on an updated software version, more modern and user-friendly, to be extended to bicycle, mountain biking, bridleways and further features.
