Good Practice Information

This is a good example of electronic fare management and automatic payment in public transport introduced in Gipuzkoa Region.
Several transport operators, like the Spanish rail operator (public), the Basque rail operator (public), the Urban and metropolitan bus companies (public-private), Taxis (private) and others implemented fare integration with all involved operators and modes (16 companies), and automatic payment facilities. Each user can now buy the smartcard or top up the smartcard, consult the historical of trips, and get invoices via Internet.
A clearing process in back office was established for compensation among operators and transfer compensations. A minimum revenue is guaranteed. The objectives were to enable simplified access to different transport modes by harmonising the diversified tickets and fares, and therefore foster the use of public transport.

Evidence of success

The integrated fare system, introducing common fares for different companies set by the Authority was a real success. More than 80% of total trips are done with the e-card. About 70 million trips per year are made via the integrated fares system (700.000 inhabitants in Gipuzkoa).
