Intelligent Urban Mobility Management System for the City of Thessaloniki
Topic of the practice
Provision of traffic information services for urban mobility management
Good Practice Information
The project is related to the high traffic volume in the Metropolitan area of Thessaloniki. The objective is to provide traffic management services, to shift a number of daily trips from private car to public means of transport. The operations of the Traffic Control Centre include the dynamic estimation of traffic conditions for future periods within a day,
the dynamic management of traffic lights based on the estimated traffic conditions and incident detection and management using real-time information. Real time traffic data that are collected through road traffic counters and detectors (including cameras, radars, loop detectors and Bluetooth detectors) are used, also to provide advanced traveller information services (ATIS).
Evidence of success
The system increased the use of Public Transport means to and from the centre of Thessaloniki from 25% to 45% over a period of two years, as well as the use of environmentally friendly transport means (bicycle or walking) in the city centre by 50% over a period of three years. Moreover, the system reduced the levels of traffic induced pollutants in the centre of Thessaloniki by 5%-25%.
