Implementation of road safety measures

Good Practice Information

Marche Region implemented a digital cadastre of district roads to plan at best the maintenance interventions over the road network and to improve the safety through better conditions. Part of the system is the monitoring center, which is collecting data from removable devices (e.g. camera on the road). The constant updating and management of the data base is necessary.
The system is linked to the Decision Support System (DSS) to allow timely adoption of best measures and interventions. The realization of the decision support system for road safety is co-funded with a contribution of 70% by the Italian Ministry of Road Infrastructure and Transports. The University «La Sapienza» of Rome contributed to the technical realization.

Evidence of success

A general reduction of fatalities and injuries was recorded in the Region. Compared to 2012, in 2013 the number of deaths decreased by -13,1% and injuries by -0,5%, altought accidents increased by +1,2%. Ancona registered the highest n° of accidents (regional 31%) but a greater decrease of deaths (-37,1%). Best results were in Ascoli Piceno:-42,9% deaths, in spite of +5,3% accidents [ISTAT 2013].
