CSR as a business model to be competitive in luxury tourism

Good Practice Information

Inchydoney Lodge and Spa Hotel is located close to the town of Clonakilty which is located about 50km west of Cork City. Inchydoney Lodge and Spa Hotel is a four star hotel located in a scenic bay overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, it is a medium-sized hotel with four floors, restaurants, spa, swimming pool, gym and other facilities. It is an example of good practice in environmentally sustainable construction and business operation.
The hotel has been building a reputation as a high quality and environmentally conscious hotel. CSR practices are well-developed at Inchydoney Hotel. Special environmental training is given to all personnel, so that they are familiar with how the systems works and the part they must play. As a result elevated satisfaction levels have been experienced by both staff and hotel guests.
Energy efficiency is taken seriously at Inchydoney Hotel, much upgrading has been undertaken thus far including the replacement of heating and cooling systems (fossil fuel – gas) with renewable fuel (wood pellets) from local forests, and the fitment of energy efficient boilers. In addition staff are trained in order to lower the hotel’s environmental footprint, for example, if the hotel is only at 25% or 50% capacity then only one or two floors will be occupied to maximize efficiency. Sea water is pumped directly from the sea, heated to a suitable temperature using solar panels and circulated in the spa and swimming pool. The water is returned to the sea and replaced as required (there has been no chemical treatment in the process). Lighting systems are in the process of being retro-fitted using low energy and LED lamps. The local and wider community benefits from reduced emissions, and takes pride in having a ‘green’ hotel in their community.

Evidence of success

Inchydoney Lodge and Spa Hotel prides itself on being a responsible business and has received many awards including:
• Best Resort Hotel, Overall Winner 2009 at the National Hospitality Awards.
• Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland Award for Renewable Energy in 2007.
