Good Practice Information

APINI is a unique international-level leader in sustainable development expertise where working is meaningful and studying is beneficial.
Environmental protection is a catalyst of Institute’s activities. To this end, APINI first and foremost aims to carry out research for environment impact reduction, to create and implement innovations in the companies reducing the impact to the environment, to increase society’s awareness about environment protection and to contribute to reduction of adverse impacts on the environment in daily work and personal activity. Since 1993 APINI’s activity is related to implementing various means of sustainable industrial development in Lithuania and many developing countries.
The majority of APINI work has direct influence on sustainable industry development and environmental policy making. The employees closely cooperate with many domestic and foreign industry companies and organizations, universities and other scientific institutions, as well as with national governmental institutions and the society. Main activities of APINI are: scientific research and their implementation; education of master and doctoral students; participation at the nation and international projects; education, trainings, knowledge spread and consultation of the business companies on the sustainable development and environmental topics; participating in international and national expert’s organizations activities.
The main research areas: sustainable industry development; environmental performance improvement through pollution prevention and cleaner production methods; eco-design, life cycle assessment; chemicals management and environmental impact assessment; integrated waste management; corporate social responsibility.

Evidence of success

In the course of 23 years APINI realized more than 100 projects. The institute has organized 28 international conferences and seminars. Since 1991, employees independently or in cooperation with international partners have published 33 books. Since 2001, 26 articles in ISI Web of Science journals were published, as well as 62 articles in other international databases and 50 articles in other peer reviewed journals. Since its establishment, more than 200 sustainable innovations were introduced, which contributed to the improvement of economic and environmental situation.
In 2012 APINI was awarded the ENERGY GLOBE World Award for Sustainability for the project “Theoretical and practical masters’ training for sustainable industry development”.
In 2013, APINI was approved by the Quality Assurance System of Scientific and Technological Universities for Sustainable Industry (QUESTE-SI) and was awarded the QUESTE-SI award for providing the best engineering education for sustainable industry in Europe.
