Topic of the practice
ICT in rural areas
Good Practice Information
Denmark has very poor network connection in rural areas due to the fact that it is owned by private companies, who cannot generate a profit outside the big cities. The Village Councilor and the municipality (Jammerbugt Kommune) now took the initiative to invite a high-speed fiber broadband company into a partnership to implement a gigabit digitization project in Tranum.
The project is called ‘Digital Tranum’ and measured at internet speed it makes Tranum one of the fastest villages in Europe with an internet speed at a rate up to 1 Gigabit/sec. The purpose of the project is about creating better opportunities for the citizens, school and business. In other words it is about ensuring the future of the village as an attractive village to live and work.
Evidence of success
It is still a rather new project so the expected results are increased settlement, increased tourism, increased businesses and entrepreneurs and thereby a way to maintain the life in the village.
