Encouraging Low Emission Transports

Good Practice Information

Essex County Council Travel Plan shows a good practice of how to encourage low emission transports. The Plan includes many improvement measures for Essex County Council Staff like free bike loans, free cycling parking including showers facilities, training sessions for cyclists, discount tickets for public transport, a share car scheme with a dedicated web, etc. 100% of fund is public and come from Essex County Council.

With the Travel Plan, Essex County Council, with 7824 employees, aims to set an example as an active way to contribute to the CO2 reductions and to minimize the impact that Essex County Council staff travels has on the local transport network. Civil servants are the main stakeholders, but all citizens will be beneficiary of a traffic reduction and linked improvements (e.g. C02 reduction)

Evidence of success

With this Plan the Essex County Council is seen as an organisation which provides travel benefits for its employees. The travel discounts for staff is of 15% discount on annual season tickets and 6 monthly tickets, and a 10% discount on all weekly, monthly and quarterly tickets which attract many of the staff to travel by train and bus, including Park and Ride.
