Topic of the practice

Encouraging Low Emission Transports

Good Practice Information

Consolidation of Goods and Sustainable Procurement within the Municipality of Växjö demonstrates a good example of encouraging low emission transports. In particular, Växjö Municipality have developed a central e-purchasing system to reduce transport work, costs and CO2 emissions, improve road safety and the increment of the proportion of organic and locally produced products. When procurements are coordinated, it is easier for local and smaller producers to take part in the procurement.

Stakeholders: Municipality of Växjö and its contract unit are citizens, local producers and carriers.
Funding: The system reduces administration costs and enables the Municipality to do better procurements, so the initial costs associated with the establishment of the system, for example building the consolidation centre and obtaining and implementing the E-purchasing system will be compensated.

Evidence of success

The following results have been achieved: Reductions of 71-76% kWh per delivered ton, 71-76% of the CO2 per delivered ton, 82% in deliverables per week; 60% of increase the number of local producers.
For the Municipality of Växjö it allows to make better deals (price and conditions). As they also get better statistics and better control it is easier to implement an environmental friendly purchasing behavior within units.
