BUSCYCLETTE: a public service dedicated to bicycles
Topic of the practice
Good Practice Information
BUSCYCLETTE shows a good example of encouraging cycing low emission transports. With the objective of increasing the use of bicycles in the metropolitan area of Amiens, Amiens Métropole, develops a Public Service managed through a Public Service Delegation to the Vélo Service Association. The service includes a rental service, a bicycle safekeeping service (either on the Buscyclette premises or in the bicycle parking zones), a bicycle repair service, training courses at schools and leisure centres, a cycling school for the general public (adults and children) and public awareness campaigns, including for private companies and local authorities. Amiens Métropole funds the running costs of the service (2012: €285,675 in expenses & €170,783 of income without replacement of the bicycle fleet). Initial partnership with cycling associations was main key success factor.
Evidence of success
Rental days have been rising steadily: 2056% between 2002 and 2011. The majority of bicycle renters are under 26 (students); 82 persons used the cycling school in 2012 (more than doubled compared to the year 2011); 1005 schoolchildren and 189 children in leisure centres were trained in 2012; the repair center is mainly for the Buscyclette fleet, but general public also uses it (31% of repairs)
