Topic of the practice

The action provides the means for protecting intellectual property rights, which have emerged from R&D projects and activities that have been concluded in the last five years and were implemented in the context of programmes announced or administrated by Agency, the European Union or other national or international research foundations.

Good Practice Information

The basic objective of the “Patent” Specific Action is to increase the number of patents granted to Cypriot organisations, enterprises and inventors. Administering agency is Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation. The proposals are submitted to the Agency and then evaluated in priority order, and as long as funding is available in the budget of the present call, money are attached to the applicants.
The idea regarding this measure did not emerge from other countries. However, we can state that the measure is transferable because its characteristics do not depend much on Cypriot factors, it is a flexible measure with simple application procedures and it acquires short evaluation periods.

Evidence of success

Evaluation is expected to begin in 2012. However, since 2008 to 2012 only five proposals were supported, but one has to consider this in a context of a general lack for innovative projects in Cyprus. Thus, even this number is small in absolute terms, it can be considered as a success, because it is more than possible that withnout this measure would be submitted even less patent applications.
