An integrated approach to local development by a small rural community over 40 years.

Good Practice Information

The Development Company “Connemara West Plc.” demonstrates how an integrated approach to local development strengthens a small rural community over 40 years. Connemara West Plc is a community owned and managed rural Development Company in North West Connemara. It was established in 1971 and has over 500 shareholders from the local communities and shareholding. It employs 14 full time and 16 part-time staff.
The following activities are managed by Connemara West: Renvyle Thatched Cottages, Teach Ceoil, Connemara West Centre, Furniture College, Conservation, Resource office, Library, Community Radio, Ellis Hall, Forum, Foscadh Community Development Ltd, Youthreach Programme.  
The good practice of the development company can be transferred to other areas where local community projects are active. It provides direction to show how a local community project has evolved over the years using EU and National funding and remained sustainable for over 40 years.  

Evidence of success

The project has sustained its activities for over 40 years.
The project now delivers EU and nationally funded programmes in the local area and currently has a direct staff of 19 with another 115 employed in projects that have been established by the organisation.
