Good Practice Information
This good practise shows how an area can be made more attractive for tourists by collectively promoting the services of the area by using modern information communication technologies.
The small town of Bük - having about 3000 inhabitants - is situated in the western tourist region of Transdanubia, close to the Austrian border. The Spa of Bük, which is well-known throughout Europe, became one of the most significant medical spas of Hungary in the second part of the 20th century.
Although the tourism industry offers outstanding economic benefits, growth and opportunities for the inhabitants and businesses in the area, the matching of the constantly altering demands of visitors, and the „tourism offer” of the destination remained a great challenge for service-oriented SMEs until the last couple of years. The offer of tourism related service-providers (SMEs) of Bükfürd used to be disintegrated, and not very effectively promoted, as the potential of using modern information communication technologies and tools remained unexploited.
The local Tourism Destination Management (TDM) Organisation of the city - the Public Association for Tourism in Bük and Bükfürd – realised better promotion, marketing and selling of the values of the area through development of a successful tourism website (www.visitbuk.hu) for Bük as well as introduction of modern web based customer services for tourists in partnership with the local tourism related service-provider community.
Evidence of success
Because of the good practice there is now better promotion, marketing and selling of the values of the area through:
- 1 operational tourism website (www.visitbuk.hu) – open for tourism related service providers of Bük, Bükfürd
- approx. 120 registered association members (entrepreneurs) on the website
- approx. 100 association members with improved skills and knowledge of using the official tourism website
- online marketing training for appr. 40-50 association members
