Creation of an e-service virtual tourist guide
Topic of the practice
Showing how information of tourist attractions in different countries can be made accessible, in this case, by the creation of an e-service virtual tourist guide.
Good Practice Information
This good practise shows how information of tourist attractions in different countries can be made accessible, in this case, by the creation of an e-service virtual tourist guide. This tourist guide is a modern technological solution which provides tourists with a virtual guide (this is a kind of virtual person moving together with the user and provides him with general or historical information) with graphical or audio data about the place he is in or is searching for.
The application co-operates online with Internet servers who are providing data. The project is innovative internationally. There are some e-guides in the market, however, they can not be used as a virtual guide taking into consideration client’s GPS position and providing (among others) audio service with basic information about the visited place. The new e-service is launched in Poland and other countries (Italy, France, Spain, USA). The service is realised with the use of an application operator in mobile devices with the operational systems Symbian (Nokia N95 or N97) and Apple for iPhones.
The necessary information is provided in the wide area around a given tourist attraction (e.g. in the whole town). Volume of data transmitted is unlimited, and the forms of data are various, including audio. The innovation bases on the joint use of a couple of modern technologies, such as Google Maps, global GPS positioning in smartphones, data transfer via GPRS, UMTS etc, sound compression in digital form.
Evidence of success
The success is that there have been until the end of 2012 already 20 000 users and there is a functioning e-service : www.gpsmobileguide.com.
