EGTC – International Marine Park of the Strait of Bonifacio (PMIBB)
Topic of the practice
Joint governance tool to preserve natural heritage
Good Practice Information
Since 2000, the public bodies that manage 2 different protected areas - the Corsican Environment Office for the Natural Reserve of the Strait of Bonifacio in Corsica, & the National Park Authority of La Maddalena Archipelago for its homonymous area - have joined forces to strengthen cooperation in the Strait of Bonifacio. The EGTC was finally created on 7 December 2012 in order to promote joint
management and protection of both natural & cultural wealth, but also to prevent natural & technological risks. The project of setting a EGTC has been 75% funded by the Maritime France-Italy 2007-2013 programme & national, regional & local funds. It is the 1st EGTC constituted to implement EU environmental policies at the transborder level with implications on the international law of the sea.
Evidence of success
Even if the EGTC was formally created on the 7th December 2012, the process of setting up has already created positive impact by bringing worldwide to public attention the topic of the navigation in the strait. A crucial stage has been reached with the designation by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) of the strait located in a Particularly Sensitive Sea Area (PSSA) .
