Good Practice Information

Following the guide for age-friendly cities developed by WHO, SDA with design team adapted the methodology in order to explore the city of Sofia as an age-friendly city and introduce it at the workshop. Experts and stakeholders formed groups; their task was to identify where/how the different spheres/facilities can become more age-friendly. They assessed different areas of city life(residential
care facilities; transportation, urban environment, public buildings; community support and healthcare; social participation), the advantages and barriers that older people experience in cities at different stages of development through adapted checklist of core age-friendly features that was discussed during workshop. Recommendations were presented to the decision makers of the municipality.

Evidence of success

Recommendations and opportunities identified by the experts were presented to the decision-makers in Sofia Municipality. Thus, the design workshop in Sofia influenced city policies and set the beginning of a sustainable practice to audit the city's age friendliness.
